Finally got around to this after multiple recent recommendations by friends (like Chris's putting this on his "classics you should stop avoiding" goodreads shelf), and it did not disappoint. In terms of caustic wit, I'd like to flatter myself in thinking that me plus bigger vocabulary minus 200 years might equal Jane Austen -- but until I get around to studying the dictionary and building a time machine, I'll have to be contented with the mere aspiration of being as ingeniously snarky as she.

Would YOU like to read an extremely depressing, torturously long and impossible to read book with a multitude of characters with no redeeming qualities? Then this is the book for you! This book took me FOREVER to read, and every time I'd pick it up again it would depress me to think about these pathetic Lamberts and the way they treated each other and themselves. If I want to listen to, read something, watch something depressing, I'll watch the news. This is not what books are for.

Okay, REALLY disturbingly interesting plot, VERY stiff and overly formal writing. I realized when I'd finished it that it was translated from the German but still, fashion plates. So, you know, mixed bag. Loved the descriptions of scents, though.
